DESCRIPTION:May 20\, 2022 4:00 p.m. \nPresented by\nMark Turner\, Photographer\, Speaker\, Writer \nNorthwest roadsides can spring to life with showy wildflowers during the spring and summer. While we have a number of invasive weeds\, many of our native species also put on quite a show\, including a few that are rare or endemic like the uniquely-colored Lomatium columbianum (Columbia desert parsley) found along Hwy 14 in the Columbia Gorge. Some flowers are prominent enough to recognize at 65 mph on the freeway. Others will be found only when meandering slowly along a Forest Service byway. In this program you’ll be introduced to about 60 plants that are easily recognized from behind your windshield. \nThis month\, we are again partnering with The Camas Library for this online Zoom Webinar. SUMMARY:Bring Back the Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:December 17\, 2021 4:00 p.m.\nPresented by\nDave Kollen\, Xerces Society Ambassador \nHow can we play a role in pollinator conservation\, both in general and in our own landscapes and communities? Much has been said about pollinators and their importance in natural systems and our food system but the importance can’t be stressed enough. Let’s talk about the natural history\, threats\, conservation and especially what we can do in our own landscapes to create a more pollinator-friendly space. We’ll focus more particularly on native bees since they are by far the most important pollinator for angiosperms\, thus our food supply. By focusing on this we not only serve pollinators\, but native insects in general. Also\, for those interested in going above and beyond\, opportunities to get involved in community science activities are covered. \nThis month\, we are back partnering with The Camas Library as hosts for this online class using Zoom. \nBring Back the Pollinators Flyer

SUMMARY:Pruning with a Pro
DESCRIPTION:Presented by\nAaron Krieger\, Owner of AK Timber Services LLC.\nAaron is an ISA Certified Arborist as well as TRAQ qualified and he will be going over the types of pruning and why they are needed. \n\nDead wooding – Pruning to remove dead\, dying\, and decaying branches only\nThinning – This type of pruning is used to thin out the trees canopy. Thinning allows air and wind to pass through the tree\, reducing the risk of falling or branches breaking in storms. It also allows sunlight to reach the plants and grass below and air to flow freely between the branches.\nRaise canopy – Trimming a tree in this way removes the bottom branches to raise the trees canopy. This would be done to remove an obstruction raise a tree above a walkway or driveway or to allow sunlight to reach grass and plants below the tree.\nCanopy cleaning – A climber removes all dead\, dying\, or decaying wood\, removes all sucker and sprout growth in the canopy\, and removes branches to maintain the trees natural form or direct growth.\nFruit tree pruning – best times (seasons) to prune\, how to prune to secure fruit production\n\nWe are partnering again with the Camas Library as hosts for this online class using Zoom. SUMMARY:New Garden Strategies
DESCRIPTION:When is the last time you heard anyone say\, “Is your garden done yet?” As a gardener\, you know that response too well —’never!’ This year\, 2020\, has been an especially difficult one for all of us\, but I also lost my dear husband in the middle of the madness. My garden has been a solace\, but big changes are coming! The upper garden will shrink by over half. Let me share with you some of the strategies I considered and those I am implementing\, while I am forced to completely rethink how this area will respond to a new fence line with a possible house behind me. Maintenance\, irrigation\, plant durability\, drought-tolerance\, and creating privacy are all subjects on which I’ll touch. \nWe are again partnering with the Fort Vancouver Regional Library as hosts for this online class using Zoom. For registration please use the link below. The Zoom link will be sent to registrants one hour before the event begins so all attendees must be registered prior. \nEvaluating and Implementing New Garden Strategies Flyer
