Let’s make cleaning day a green day! The gals from Garden Delights Herb Farm are back with us; this time to discuss a variety of herbs and their properties that are effective in warding off bacteria, viruses and pests. Get recipes for how to use them for cleaning purposes. We will make two products in class for you to take home.

January Class-Recap

Our first class of the year (Bring Nature to your Doorstep – Planning and Designing with Nature) generated lots of interest. Jane Tesner Kleiner, a local landscape architect, ecologist, environmental educator and disabilities advocate gave us some great ideas, concepts and principles to consider when planning/designing your garden spaces.

Student Gardener Coordinator Program

We will begin the Spring session of this program in March. There will also be a Fall session later in the year. This is an educational program that pairs CASEE students with adult volunteer mentors. The aim is to learn together around nature themed subjects and complete related activities in the Wildlife Botanical Gardens. The program will be facilitated by Pamela Moody (NS member and Master Gardener) who has a botany and horticulture background. The Spring session will occur on four consecutive Saturdays in March starting March 2nd thru March 23rd from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The indoor portion will be conducted in a CASEE classroom then out in the gardens.

We are seeking volunteers who can help for all (or some) of the sessions each Saturday. If you would be interested in volunteering for this intergenerational program or would like more information please let me know!

(marlene52ns@gmail.com). Some great topics planned for students as well as adults to enjoy. This is a great opportunity to learn from each other!

Saturday Morning Work Parties

For those who would like to volunteer at the gardens, our Saturday morning work parties (SMWP) will start in March and last through October. Each Saturday morning (from 9:00am to noon) volunteers are guided by one of our garden coordinators to work on needed tasks/projects in the various gardens. Non-Saturday dates and other opportunities may also be available at times. We have a sign-up system using SignUpGenius. Additional sign up dates will be routinely added. To sign up to work on listed days, here is the link: SignUpGenius

Upcoming Events–Save the Dates

Planning has already begun for a few of our annual events. Here are dates you may want to put on your calendars! More information will be forthcoming.

We are having our annual sale this year at the Wildlife Botanical Gardens in Brush Prairie on Saturday April 27th from 9am to 4pm and Sunday April 28th from 10am to 3pm. More information regarding shopping will be forthcoming. The CASEE Center will be selling natives from their greenhouse and Garden Delight Herb Farm will also join us with their booth.

This is our big fundraising event of the year and it takes lots of volunteers before and during the sale event!

Some volunteer needs: Heelers, Labeler-placers, Field Helpers, Holding area, Baggers, Checkers, Cashiers etc.

More details to come. Our success depends upon our volunteers–please consider helping! If you are interested

Art in the Garden:

Sunday July 14th 10am to 4pm. Artists will be displaying and selling their creations which are strategically located among the various gardens. This will be the 12th year for this beloved event!

Shed Reorganization

Reorganization of the Wildlife Botanical Garden’s large and small sheds is well underway with plans for completion before work parties start in March. Monica initiated this project last fall and drew schematics and shared her ideas with the team (John, Karen, Meredith and Julie) on the reorganization. John spent many hours performing tasks (responsibly disposing of old chemicals and broken items; rebuilding the small shed floor; replacing the old shelving in both the large and small sheds with new; reorganizing the layout of the workbench area and the equipment). Karen, Julie and Meredith helped with organizing supplies needed for our events and weeding out old periodicals.  Monica is still working on plans for creating a structure for First Aid supplies and a desktop for forms. Whew!! lots of work, thanks to the group, it looks great!

Booklet

With funding from a Washington Native Plant Society (WNPS) grant and with many volunteer hours from committee members (you know who you are) a longtime dream has been fulfilled.
We have created a free 52-page booklet as an educational tool that includes dozens of high-quality photos, descriptions and other information regarding native plants found at The Wildlife Botanical Gardens and reasons to incorporate them in your landscape. Nature Related Quote of the Month

In light of recent developments……

From Paulo Coelho: “I have seen many storms in my life. Most storms have caught me by surprise, so I had to learn very quickly to look further and understand that I am not capable of controlling the weather, to exercise the art of patience and to respect the fury of nature.”

Enjoy!!
