We’ll discuss the historical influences of other countries on cooking here in Vancouver. Come smell, feel and even taste some of the favorite herbs featured.

Please let me know via email if you would like to attend this class to ensure proper chair set up and materials–members are always welcome.

September Class–Recap

Hopefully, even composting veterans learned a tip or two from our class, Composting Methods & Options conducted by Pete DuBois, Clark County Composter Recycler Program. There are many ways to compost and/or keep organics out of the garbage and/or put it to good use making soil humus.

Garden Tidings…..

In the May newsletter we shared a story about An Oregon White Oak which was donated as a memorial to the wife of a  member of the Clark County Beekeepers Association (Eliot).
A plaque to that effect was recently added to honor the donation which was planted in the back area of the Homestead Garden. As we know that tree is a keystone tree for this area.
Upon learning of the plaque Eliot shared his feelings (edited):
“What a worthwhile cause and I know when I need some time to think I can go out there and see that tree and watch it grow and see the plaque again. My wife Patti would’ve just absolutely loved the tree. I grew up to appreciate every living thing and trees are beautiful. I love them. I love plants. I love planting them. I think what you’re doing is absolutely wonderful. Thank you again for everything.”

WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardeners celebrated the wealth of their volunteer support at the Volunteer Recognition party on September 9th,once again, at the beautifully blooming Wildlife Botanical Gardens. Our own NS president Meredith, received an award for her longtime active association with the organization. See pic–she is furthest on the right.

On September 13th a few members took an early morning walk at the gardens with the knowledgeable Brandon from Backyard Bird Shop leading the group. He helped us spot birds as well as other non-human guests to the gardens, and shared his vast array of facts with us. In all, we spotted 11 assorted “visitors” and heard (some per the Merlin app) 6 others including one unidentified frog. The weather changed for the better and it was a great morning!
While at the gardens the other day, I observed several different groups taking pictures (of themselves) with the gardens as the backdrop. Some were quite elaborate with a change of outfits and everything! Who knew?! Never know what you’ll see…or the many ways the gardens are enjoyed by the community.

Tours/talks

Our president, Meredith, represented NatureScaping of SW Washington last month at a nonprofit speed networking event hosted by Ripple NW and the Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. She spoke about volunteering opportunities at the gardens. Read about it (and see a pic of the back of her head) Volunteerism with a twist: Greater Vancouver Chamber and Ripple Impact NW team up for speed networking event.
